dmg_blog_8_13_lead_magnetWhen you start working on your marketing funnel, you have a list of things you will need to provide the person creating your funnel, or for you, if you are doing it yourself. The first item on the list, because it’s the first item that will be implemented first is your Lead Magnet. Sounds easy enough, right? You may think, I’ll be checking that one off in minutes. But, don’t worry, lots of people get stuck on it. You start to realize how important getting this one item in your funnel really is. This is the first point of contact many times, with your new potential leads, and you want to wow them.

1. First of all, you’ll need to make a plan. I recommend taking a sheet of paper and drawing a line down the middle of it. On the left side, write down concerns or “problems” or topics that have relativity to your target market. If you are a dentist, your target market may want to know, “What is the correct way to floss?” That’s a great lead magnet idea right there. So on the other side of the paper, write down 4 or 5 ways that you can help your target market find answers to their problem. Assuming the same flossing question as before, you could write things like, “Choosing the right floss, flossing daily, flossing with braces, and brushing before or after flossing.”  This is only one lead magnet idea, and you will need more than one, so repeat this with different ideas to help your target market.

2. Now you’ve got your plan, which is honestly half of the battle. But you see the importance of step one, so that you don’t sit around for months saying, “I’ll start on my marketing funnel just as soon as I come up with an idea for a lead magnet.” Stop waiting for someday and get started! In this step you will need to think of the medium that you will be presenting you lead magnet in. Will you make an instructional video on how to floss your teeth correctly? That’s certainly one idea. Or you could make a Powerpoint slide show or a PDF format with pictures, explaining step by step how to floss properly.

3. The third and final step is to publish your lead magnet and get your funnel started. When you publish your lead magnet, you don’t want to just give it away for free. Wait a minute, aren’t lead magnets something we give away for free? Well, yes. We don’t want money for them, but we didn’t do all this work out of the goodness of our hearts. What we want in exchange is their information, like name and email, so that they can go through the rest of our funnel. So whether you opted for a short video, a slideshow or a eBook, go ahead an upload that to your website. Now, you need to make a landing page that describes to your visitors that they can get this free Guide to Flossing, once they put in their name and email address. Now, you can have an automated email system that will send them the link to the media that you uploaded, your Lead Magnet.
